Types of Respirators We Test

OCS conducts fit testing for all types of respirators used across industrial, construction, healthcare, and emergency response settings. Our technicians are trained to test the following respirator configurations:

N95 Filtering Facepiece Respirators

Standard disposable respirators commonly used in healthcare, construction, and manufacturing for particulate protection.

Half-Face Air-Purifying Respirators

Reusable elastomeric respirators used with cartridge filters for gases, vapors, and particulates.

Full-Face Air-Purifying Respirators

Full-face respirators providing respiratory and eye protection in high-hazard environments.

SCBA and PAPR Systems

Self-contained breathing apparatus and powered air-purifying respirators used in confined spaces, firefighting, and atmospheres immediately dangerous to life and health.

Note: Employees must be clean-shaven where the respirator seal contacts the face. Facial hair prevents a proper seal and invalidates fit test results.

Qualitative Fit Testing

Qualitative fit testing is conducted by putting a hood over the test subject who is wearing the mask being tested. Bitrex or Saccharin are sprayed into the hood and the mask’s fit factor is decided if the test subject can smell or taste anything. If the mask fits properly, all seams should be leak-proof which means the subject should not be able to smell or taste the spray. While this test can be subjective to each person’s specific senses, qualitative testing can be used if the individuals are not in direct contact with any exposure.

Qualitative Fit Testing
Quantitative Fit Testing

Quantitative Fit Testing

Quantitative fit testing is done by probing the mask so a machine can scientifically prove that there are no leaks in the mask and that the wearer is properly protected. The individual wearing the mask will have to go through a series of simple movements and exercises to ensure that the respirator remains sealed to the face during common movements. Quantitative testing is the preferred form of testing for environments involving hazardous viral or airborne exposures.

N95 Fit Testing

OCS is certified to conduct either Qualitative or Quantitative fit testing. Because it is a respirator, an N95 mask needs to be tested just like full-face and half-face respirators. With N95 respirators being introduced to new types of industries, it is important for employees to wear a properly fitted mask to avoid any negative side-effects of breathing through a respirator over time.

Protect Your Workforce with Professional Respirator Fit Testing

OSHA requires annual fit testing for employees who wear respirators on the job, but getting your crew tested doesn’t mean losing half a day to appointments and travel. Our certified technicians conduct both qualitative and quantitative fit testing at our Livonia and Ann Arbor clinics, or we can bring testing to your worksite to test entire crews in one visit.

Qualitative vs. Quantitative Testing

Not sure which testing method your workplace needs? Qualitative testing uses taste or smell detection and works well for standard respirator programs, while quantitative testing measures actual leakage and is required for high-risk exposures like silica and asbestos work. Our technicians help you determine which protocol meets your specific OSHA requirements based on your workplace hazards and exposure levels.

Same-Day Documentation

We provide written documentation of all fit test results the same day, including pass/fail status, respirator make and model, fit factor scores, and technician credentials. This documentation meets OSHA recordkeeping requirements and integrates directly into your respiratory protection program files, so you’re ready when inspectors show up.

Clinic & Onsite Testing Options

Fit testing is available at our Livonia and Ann Arbor locations, or we can come to your worksite with all necessary equipment. Onsite testing eliminates employee travel time and allows us to test multiple workers in one visit, minimizing operational disruption and keeping your project on schedule.

Why Choose Occupational Care Services for Respirator Fit Testing

With over 30 years of experience conducting fit testing for 109,000+ workers nationwide, we’ve served companies from two-person crews to Fortune 500 enterprises across construction, manufacturing, healthcare, and industrial sectors. As a 100% woman-owned business, we qualify for federal contracts and corporate supplier diversity programs while delivering the responsive, personalized service that larger chains can’t match.

Certified Technicians & Calibrated Equipment

Our technicians are trained on both Bitrex and Saccharin qualitative methods, plus Quantifit—considered the Gold Standard in Quantitative Fit Testing—Portacount, and other quantitative testing machines for high-risk exposure environments. We use calibrated equipment that meets current OSHA standards and can help you determine which testing protocol your specific workplace hazards require.

Testing Options That Minimize Downtime

Fit testing is available at our Livonia and Ann Arbor clinicsor we can bring all necessary equipment to your worksite. Onsite testing allows us to test multiple employees in one visit, reducing travel time and keeping your crew productive. We accommodate shift work, after-hours scheduling, and high-volume testing needs.

Documentation Ready for Audits

We provide written fit test results the same day, including respirator make and model, fit factor scores, and test method used. Documentation is formatted for OSHA respiratory protection program files and ready for compliance—no scrambling to track down paperwork when inspectors arrive.

Industries We Serve

OSHA’s respiratory protection requirements vary by industry based on workplace hazards and exposure levels. We provide fit testing for:

Construction & Manufacturing

Fit testing for silica dust, welding fumes, and particulate exposures requiring filtering facepiece and half-mask respirators.

Healthcare Facilities

N95 respirator fit testing and higher-level respiratory protection against airborne pathogens.

Chemical & Industrial Plants

Quantitative fit testing to meet stricter OSHA exposure protocols for hazardous substances.

Foundries

Fit testing for metal fume exposures, molten material handling, and high-temperature particulate hazards common in casting operations.

Concrete Plants

Respirator fit testing for crystalline silica exposures during mixing, cutting, and grinding operations.

Mining Operations

Quantitative fit testing for coal dust, silica, and other mineral particulate exposures in underground and surface mining environments.

Get Started with Respirator Fit Testing

Schedule fit testing for your team at our Livonia or Ann Arbor clinics or request mobile onsite testing anywhere in Michigan and Nationwide. Walk-ins are welcome at both locations during business hours.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are respirator fit testing services? +
Respirator fit testing services verify that respirators create a proper seal on employees’ faces to meet OSHA’s respiratory protection standard requirements. OSHA requires employers to conduct fit testing before workers use respirators and annually thereafter, with results documented in the company’s respiratory protection program files.
Who is required to undergo respirator fit testing? +
Employers must provide fit testing for any employee who wears respirators, including N95 masks, half-face and full-face respirators, SCBAs, and PAPRs. Industries with fit testing requirements include construction (silica and lead exposure), manufacturing (welding fumes and particulates), healthcare (N95 respirators), and chemical or industrial facilities (hazardous substance exposures).
Is respirator fit testing required by OSHA? +
Yes, OSHA requires respirator fit testing under 29 CFR 1910.134. Fit testing must be performed before initial respirator use and repeated at least annually, or whenever a different respirator model or size is used.
